What is Authentic Vintage Clothing?

First of all you are not alone with this question. Lots of companies take advantage of this fact and label their new or secondhand clothes as Vintage. Accordingly, most people think that items in a vintage style are Vintage. Here’s a very easy hack to detect fake Vintage: When a sewn-in tag or label says ‚Vintage‘, it can’t be. Those are new, usually cheaply made copies of authentic Vintage goods – called Retro. At the time authentic Vintage clothes were produced they were new. We just call them Vintage now. Authentic Vintage Clothing is the muse and inspiration of most contemporary clothes.

When a piece of clothing is at least 20 years old, it is considered vintage. Some also call it True Vintage. If it counts 100 years or even more, it’s called Antique. Since y2k-fashion is on trend again, most Vintage resellers also count fast fashion from around the year 2000 as Vintage.
But honestly it’s like with good red wine – the older the better. Even the term’s origin derives from the vinery sector. In this sense Vintage refers to a usually superior wine made from a yield of grapes of one certain year.

In the 60s The Wool Bureau, Inc. advertised the wool mark. It was „awarded to quality products made of the world’s best pure wool“ exclusively. Whenever people could, they were picky about materials. Fabrics were thicker and thus much more durable. Moreover, the quality of workmanship of hand-crafted clothes from garment manufacturers until the 90s is superior to today’s Fast Fashion mass production.

Is Authentic Vintage Clothing Sustainable?

Sustainability. Another term thrown around all over the place lately. Even Fast Fashion companies state that they are sustainable, but still overproduce. There’s even a word for this image-lifting marketing tool: it’s called Greenwashing. We know that it has become difficult to keep track. Now being aware of the difference, you’re also ready to answer the following questions:

You’ve guessed it! Well, some state that the most sustainable option is being naked and Vintage comes second. Since going naked isn’t really a solution to most of us nowadays, there’s only one #1. The most sustainable option is Authentic Vintage Clothing.

Well, that’s easy. Authentic Vintage Clothing, produced over two decades ago, doesn’t use up any new resources.
In contrast to new clothes. For the production of every single new piece of clothing it takes plenty of resources. Therefore it can’t be as sustainable as Vintage Clothing.

It’s no secret that the Fast Fashion industry causes lots of irreversible consequences for our planet, for nature and people. I will spare you all the bloody details at this point. What makes us even angrier is that big players in Fast Fashion are destroying and burning their newly produced clothes that didn’t sell. Such a waste of valuable resources!
And there are many other ways of getting rid of clothes: For instance dumping them in a landfill. Or donations for charity getting sold in Africa and thus destroying the local african textile sector.
What do these different ways of disposal have in common? All of them show us that there are far more clothes around than people can ever wear.

There are too many companies out there pretending that they are sustainable and labelling their new clothes as Vintage.

We choose a better way:

„We live sustainability & transparency & we love individuality.
